Join Petra Velzeboar - global TEDx speaker, psychotherapist, author, and CEO of mental health consultancy PVL - as she brings expertise on topics that impact employees, managers, and C-suite leadership to evolve our workplaces and cultures for the new world of work. Born and raised in a notorious cult, Petra knows firsthand what a toxic culture feels like and what it takes to build resiliency and take responsibility for good mental health. Her angle on wellbeing in a world of change focuses on positive psychology, elite performance, and fostering dynamic teams - creating a future of work that is good for our health and sustainable for long term success.
IAIABC NextGen Award recipients from 2025 will share "Ignite" presentations, short insights on the topic of their choosing. Always a fun and informative session, come to celebrate these innovative and inspirational leaders in workers' compensation.
Join as the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry's Workers' Compensation Division shares how they identify and connect intentionally with stakeholders to ensure appropriate response to their needs and to address as many of their issues as possible. Learn more about the Department’s team of staff that support the Work Comp Campus system and its stakeholders and users, which has earned the Department kudos from insurers and other entities for the support they provide.
Mental health is top of mind for workers, workplaces, and workers' compensation systems. However, most of the discussion about mental health focuses on the absence of mental illness. Many workers who do not have a mental illness are nonetheless experiencing poor mental health, which can affect performance, productivity, and return-to-work. During this session, Dr. Kathleen Dobson and Dr. Michael Lacroix will describe the nuance between mental illness and mental health, discuss Dr. Dobson's recent findings regarding how these different constructs are associated with wage replacement claim durations in the Ontario workers' compensation system, and then lead a discussion on the implications for workers’ compensation regulators.

Wednesday, October 8, 2025

Workers' compensation regulators and agency heads from around the world address major policy and regulatory challenges impacting the industry in this session. This is a highlight of the IAIABC Convention; over 40 different jurisdictions are expected to participate! Be in the room where it happens and attend this informative session.
This session explores two approaches to modernizing workers’ compensation claims management through strategic partnerships and innovative models. First, learn how the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (WSCC) is pioneering a new case management model—integrating private sector expertise with internal teams to enhance capacity while retaining critical decision-making. Then, discover how the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario is co-developing tailored technology solutions with Guidewire to transform claims operations. This collaboration has allowed product development to meet the unique demands of workers’ compensation, reducing costly customizations and enabling sustainable functionality. Attendees will gain insights into governance, partnership dynamics, and see a demonstration of key features shaping the future of claims management.
Join this session to learn about the Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP), California's statewide effort aimed at reducing job-related injuries and illnesses among workers. The presentation will describe the components of WOSHTEP, highlight WOSHTEP's accomplishments, and provide information on training materials developed through this program.
Medicare Set-Asides (MSAs) continue to present several challenges for workers’ compensation claimants and insurers. Understanding core MSA principles and new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) updates is critical to improve best practices, stay compliant, and settle claims. This session breaks down MSAs from a practical claim perspective with a focus on key MSA compliance issues and examines CMS’s new Total Payment Obligation to Claimant (TPOC)/MSA reporting requirements.
Join Stephen Cooper of NCCI as he examines the state of the economy and its impact on the workers' compensation industry.
As marijuana laws and patterns of use continue to evolve, workers' compensation professionals face growing challenges in understanding its medical applications, legal complexities, and potential risks. This session will provide an evidence-based update on the role of marijuana in work-related injuries, particularly in the treatment of pain. Attendees will examine the latest research, controversies, adverse events, and future implications for claim professionals, nurses, and medical providers.
In 2024, Washington State introduced Skill Enhancement Training (SET) to help injured workers build basic skills earlier in the vocational referral process. SET supports motivation, self-confidence, and work readiness to increase likely success in a training plan for those who ultimately need further vocational skills to return to work. Representatives from Washington’s Department of Labor & Industries will share program details and insights from its first year.
